This publication is a companion piece to Island Innovations—UNDP and GEF: Leveraging Environment and Energy
for the Sustainable Development of SIDS, a joint UNDP and GEF (Global Environment Facility) book launched at the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States, 2014.

The handbook is a joint publication of Environment Canada and the University of Joensuu – United Nations Environment Programme Course on International Environmental Law-making and Diplomacy. Environment Canada initiated this project and provided core contributions for the main text. UNEP generously provided the glossary, as well as expert advice on the handbook as a whole.

This policy applies to SPREP’s own data as well as data held by SPREP on behalf of government agencies and partners within the Pacific.
The purpose of this policy is to:
• encourage the free exchange of data with other government agencies and partners within the Pacific and with the public in the Pacific and beyond
• promote the benefits of data sharing, and its links to good governance, accountability, public participation and the rule of law

These guidelines detail the process, timeline, and steps taken to complete a State of Environment Report.

This guide assists PICs to build on existing laws and institutions to protect their environments, economies and societies from plastic pollution, improve waste management and recovery, and find alternative and practical solutions to avoidable plastic use.

This map illustrates effects of the Hunga Tonga-hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption in Nomuka island (Mu'omu'a district, Tonga) and damage assessment as detected from a Pleiades image acquired on 17 January 2022.

250 structures identified. 104 structures were analyzed in the cloud-free area and 41 structures were identified as damaged and almost all the structures were covered with ash. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field

The report describes Preliminary Satellite-Derived Damage Assessment Status for the Kingdom of Tonga - Affected structures and affected facilities observed in all island after tsunami triggered by volcanic eruption.

UNOSTAT identified 26 structures as damaged and/or destroyed and 1 structure as potentially damaged. The entire island appears to be covered with ashes. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field

This map illustrates the impact of the Hunga Tonga-hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption and the subsequent tsunami in Fonoifua island located at 110 km NE of Nuku'alofa and also the building damage assessment as detected from a Pleaides image acquired on 20 January 2022.

Proposed Project Objective: Enhanced use of data for decision making in the environment sector throughout the Pacific region. Building on the tools and momentum the Inform project established, this scaled up project will expand the user base and fill significant gaps including in situ monitoring, increased partnerships between the environment ministries and other ministries, increase use of spatial tools, and the establishment of standardise environmental standards and key indicators for key resources.
